1956년생 신용일 작가는 흙 주머니를 이용하여 직지의 글자를 적으며 오랜 세월을 보냈다. 신용일 작가의 작업은 매우 고단하다. 그는 작업을 통해 ’공(空)_완전한 비움‘을 이루려한다. 이것은 직지와 밀접한 관련이 있는 메시지이다.

그의 작업은 하루 종일 손에 쥐가 나도록 공들여 글자를 적고 한 순간에 다시 흙으로 덮어버리는 행위의 반복이다. 그러다가 어느 순간 천으로 표면을 문지르면 감춰져있던 글자가 희미하게 드러난다. 그는 이러한 고단한 작업을 하면서 인생에 대해 생각한다. 그리고 오래 공들인 것이라도 어느 순간이 되면 버려야 하는 것이 인생이고, 덜어내야 하는 것이 인생이라고 이야기한다.

작업 하나 하나마다 부단한 땀과 노력이 담긴 신용일 작가의 작품은 가만히 바라보고 있노라면 절로 숙연해진다.
