LEE MYUNG SOO

Just as each person's life is filled with color and philosophy, my own story is also contained in the canvas. My experience of living in a Hanok as a child became the motif of my work. The soft feeling of sunlight streaming into the room through the window prints, and the afterimage of my childhood gaze through the holes in the window paper were nature, such as trees and forests.
The forest is a place where countless living things interact to form a microcosm, and where energy endlessly circulates and life is regenerated. It stimulates the five senses to restore living things and leads humans to a world of rest, reflection, and deep inner self. In yoga, the forest is called a collection of energy, and in indigenous religions, the forest is considered the place where the most energy is gathered. The forest, which I visited whenever I was in pain, was a space that revived me, and that mysterious space was a sanctuary for me.
Through my past experiences, I developed a love for the forest and reconstructed a non-existent space. I reinterpreted the various aspects of life in the forest with lines, surfaces, and colors, and captured the mystery of the forest on canvas. I chose Korean paper to express the feeling of reflection and reflection I felt from the window screen. As the eldest daughter-in-law who has been performing ancestral rites for a long time, the ritual of burning fat was familiar to me. So I started working with the traces left by burning Korean paper with incense.
The image was derived from the repeated act of burning the hanji with incense, piercing it, and blocking the traces, and the regular yet irregular pattern, the speed and direction within the pattern, led to the sculptural variation of the work. The intended image and the unintended shape are combined to form an organic image. The color and brightness of the burnt image vary depending on the thickness, texture, and density of the hanji. Various images are produced depending on the length of time the hanji is burned, the direction, and the underlying image.
Circles and straight lines, small circles within circles, circles and diagonals, thin lines and thick lines, distances between lines, intersections between opposing lines, densities of different thicknesses, etc., can also lead to unintended results. The act of repeating the work, which was absorbed into my consciousness and practiced, was an act of reflection and thinking for me. The process of working, which allowed me to express infinite and diverse formativeness, was exciting. I hope that through My Forest, each person can draw a forest deep in their heart and take a break.
